2017年第四屆WBSC U12 世界盃少棒錦標賽於臺南市舉辦，來自12國的少棒國家代表隊在7月28日至8月6日為期十天的比賽中均展現了精彩的球技。臺南市政府積極推動英語為第二官方語言，期望將臺南打造為國際城市。適逢世界盃少棒錦標賽舉辦，市府第二官方語言專案辦公室特別於2017年4月至8月舉辦「瘋棒球學英文」系列活動，將棒球結合英語學習，以主題式教學及情境學習，讓臺南市的大小朋友能夠透過豐富的棒球英語活動享受學英文的樂趣。
The IV WBSC U12 Baseball World Cup was held in Tainan City in 2017 from July 28th to August 6th. National teams from 12 different countries had great games during the ten-day competition. Tainan City is promoting English as the second official language, hoping to make Tainan a truly international city. To better promote this policy, the Office of English as Second Official Language (OESOL) presented a series of baseball English promotion events before and during the Baseball World Cup. The Play Ball Baseball English Promotion Program incorporated baseball theme with English learning in various baseball English activities for citizens to enjoy.
The Play Ball Baseball English Promotion Program was consist of six different parts, all of which were organized by OESOL with the assistance from Flomo Education Foundation, CTBC Financial Management College, Studio Classroom and many other organizations. Scratch and Win was one of the baseball English promotion events, which targeting students under 15. Let’s Play Catch, on the other hand, was baseball English classes designed for parents and children to learn together. In addition, the CTBC All-English Baseball Camp which combined baseball games with English learning, summer English camps, and game stand outside the arena during the World Cup were also very popular. OESOL even partnered up with Studio Classroom to publish the Baseball English Booklet which contains baseball vocabulary and terms, conversations, and Tainan Food Map for citizens to learn. The E-book version is free for download with audio files of the text reading by Studio Classroom teachers. With these resources and events, OESOl successfully let many adults and children alike have fun learning baseball English in this great baseball festival.
Baseball English Booklet
Edited by OESOL and Studio Classroom, this booklet contains baseball vocabulary and terms, classic baseball song, conversations, and Tainan Food Map for citizens to learn English.
Scratch and Win
Students who learned and memorized 15 out of 20 selected baseball vocabulary and terms earned special stickers and a scratch-and-win card. 10% of students from age 6 to 15 were lucky enough to win gifts from the city government.
Let's Play Catch
In June 2017, the OESOL held 16 sessions of baseball English classes for citizens, attracting about six hundred people to participate in the event. The classes were designed for parents and children to learn together with English native speakers. Through fun games and lively teaching, families truly enjoyed learning baseball English.
CTBC All-English Baseball Camp
Organized by CTBC Financial Management College and OESOL, this All-English baseball camp had 8 sessions held during April and June, with about 300 children joined. The camp included baseball English classes and all-English baseball games, allowing the students to use what they just learned in the baseball games.
Summer English Camp
In the summer of 2017, Studio Classroom partnered with Houpi Elementary School, Houpi Senior High School, Nan Guang Senior High School and other schools near Sinying to hold an English summer camp. The camp incorporated baseball English into games and teaching to let students learn baseball English with fun. ADVENT summer camp held by the Education Bureau and ADVENT Foundation also included baseball English to add different elements into it.
Game Stand outside the Arena
During the IV WBSC Baseball World Cup, OESOL and Flomo Education Foundation cooperated to set up a stand outside the Tainan Baseball Stadium and hired well-trained English teachers to play games with baseball fans. At the stand one can see a huge handmade pinball table and a baseball field layout for people to play with real baseball. People were able to learn baseball terms while playing games, and many local baseball fans and those from abroad enjoyed the games.
