To build the English-friendly environment in Tainan City and provide convenient and friendly public transport service to international guests, Tainan City Government’s Office of English as the Second Official Language (OEASOL), in cooperation with the Transportation Bureau, initiated the English Oral Training Program for taxi and bus drivers. A total of 75 taxi drivers and 36 bus drivers passed the final test and were certified as English Friendly+ drivers.

OEASOL said that the courses held this year aimed to help taxi and bus drivers learn English easily. To provide the drivers useful learning materials, Chris Caputo, the Chief Consultant of the Second Official Language Program, edited the materials and listed the 50 most frequently used sentences for drivers to practice.

To further enhance English-friendly environments, OEASOL also provided three other resources for drivers to improve their English service including recordings of welcome phrases, a list of common English expressions for taxi drivers and passengers and an English tour guide book.

The Tainan City Public Transportation Office stated that the courses are in great demand.      The city government expects to start more courses next year and plans to divide the courses into different levels depending on the trainees’ English proficiency. OEASOL hopes that in the near future, the drivers earning certifications will be able to introduce scenic spots and cuisines in Tainan, showcasing the charm of Tainan as an English -friendly city.
