Information about an event at the 2018 Tainan English Reading Festival, held by the Office of English as the Second Official Language of Tainan City Government (OEASOL), has gone viral among parents’ Line groups before the official opening on July 1st. OEASOL announced that more than 3000 people have registered to participate in Peppa Pig’s Story Time, prompting them to reveal the activities ahead of schedule.
OEASOL stated that they have received numerous calls inquiring about the main guests of this year’s English Reading Festival -- children’s rock star Peppa Pig and popular YouTubers Ray and Crown Du. A massive amount of online registration crushed the system, which supposedly was not accessible to the public and hence confused staff in OEASOL: how did citizens do it? They would later realize that it was all due to the power of Google and Line: it took just a few keywords for the excited parents to find the BeClass website and a simple step of copy-and-paste in chat rooms to spread the information to hundreds of other people who are equally interested. The overwhelming responses delighted OEASOL, who thus announced more details about the festival that would originally be released on June 28th.
The 2018 Tainan English Reading Festival is funded by local business Flomo Education Foundation and operated by Caves Books and OEASOL. Starting from Peppa Pig’s Story House in July, there will be 40 English story-telling events featuring professional lecturers and 8 English-speaking forums for parents and children that are hosted by experts in English education for youths. All of these activities are followed by a lucky draw. OEASOL did not leave young adults’ favourite out: Ray Du will also be giving two special lectures on the topic of English for the new generation, the first one scheduled on July 28th.
In order to make English learning more interesting and attractive, OEASOL also included plays in the English Reading Festival, inviting the American theater company ArtSpot to perform CLEOPATRA, The Adventure of a Princess on stage in English. The admission will be free; all citizens are welcome to enjoy an experience of professional English education theater that combines musical theatre, physical comedy, and meaningful stories.
In addition to the planned activities, Caves Books prepared a variety of useful English-learning resources that will soon be uploaded on the official website of the English Reading Festival, which include the Oxford Bookworms classics, Oxford Owl ebooks, Tina & Friends audio books, and more. Tina Chen, the marketing manager of Caves Books, said that Caves Books has tried its best to provide all the English-learning materials that they have collected for the past 60 years. “It’s like a grand giveaway!” Chen added.
OEASOL will also be distributing more than 70,000 reading passports with instructions on how to utilize the aforementioned resources among elementary school students for free. Furthermore, the 2018 Tainan English Reading Festival will be holding its first-ever English reading reports competition; OEASOL encourages all citizens to submit a reading report of an English book in either Chinese or English and answer a few questions online to enter a lottery draw of prizes that include iPad, luggage cases, mini cameras, and English picture books collections. Read to get the gifts! The more you read, the bigger the chance you will earn the prizes.
