Site information

The prosperity of the Great Dongyuan area was due to the development of sugar industry. In 1910, a Japanese Takahashi Tsuneyoshi established an improved glycoside in today’s Dongyuan community with a steam-powered juicer of a 24-hr 60-ton juicing capacity, which kicked off the mechanical sugar industry in the Great Dongyuan area. During the sugaring days, a mass number of workers were required to harvest sugarcanes and make sugar; due to Rugged terrain in the Great Dongyuan area, the task of transporting sugarcanes was carried out by 12 ox-cart teams from places such as Dongshan, Baihe, Xinying, and Liujia. Many workers moved to surround areas of Qiandapu; businesses and service industries also started to develop here, as immigrants from surrounding areas, Jiangjun and Xuejia created the prosper of the Dongyuan Old Street. On the street that is less than 500 meters long, about 40-50 shops were once ran here, such as grocery stores, snack bars, Chinese medicine shops, western pharmacies, clinics, hotels in three different types, iron-forging shops, photo studios, hairdressing beauty salons, theaters, pool rooms, cloth shops, quilt shops, suit shops, tailor shops, vegetable stands, pork stands, traditional cake shops, bicycle shops, rice shops, rice mills, and building materials shops; in addition to these shops with a physical storefront, there were also street vendors running businesses like drug selling, pot fixing, and Chinese medicine selling. It was such a prosperous scene. Although the Dongyuan Old Street started waned after the closing of glycoside, these shops continued to serve for surrounding communities, forming an interesting life fabric. The whole settlement was formed alongside the river terrace as a mountain city, with buildings in traditional Minnan style, Japanese wooden houses, stucco washing finish method that was popular right after the war, and even some with beautiful iron-carving windows. It is just like an architecture museum for the common people.

About Dongshan Kiln’s Home Culture Office

Our workshop has a physical working station on the key business district of Great Dongyuan area: The Dongyuan Old Street, and we also run a FB page with the same name to manage social media relationship and deliver information. Afterwards, we discovered that a non-registered group faces many restrictions, so we then established the non-profit “Dongshan Kiln’s Home Culture Office” and the profitable “Shanhaiyuan Design Company” to support related works in the society.

“Dongshan Kiln’s Home Culture Office” is a registered and non-profit organization, whose major tasks are local-affairs managing inherited from the “Colab : D Workshop”; it is in charge of non-profit matters such as local community empowerment, assisting community organizations to apply for and execute public sector’s programs, constructing basic culture ecology data, and environmental protection. On the other hand, “Shanhaiyuan Design Company”is a registered corporation, whose shareholders are local youths coming back home or community workers coming from other places; it is positioned as a township-type profitable business and also a social enterprise, and with the non-profit matters ran by “CoLab :D Workshop”, cooperation mechanisms with local communities have been gradually established. In the past, some of our members were serving in the military or studying, so profitable businesses were not getting much attention; starting from 2018, businesses like eco-tourism, property management (targeting old houses and abandoned farmland to promote the returning of youths and just-retired population), agricultural products marketing, and spatial planning and design. Our short-term target is to provide a decent salary to our members in three years, and the long-term target is to promote community co-ops or enterprises through local industries and continue to create enough revenue to devote to public affairs, while at the same time enhance local residents’ income, reduce the dependence on public sector’s subsidies, and promote population return.
