Tainan's English Friendly shops launch coupon brochures for foreign tourists

As the 2019 Taiwan International Orchid Show will kick off at the Houpi District of Tainan city, which is expected to draw many international buyers and tourists, the Office of English as the Second Official Language (OEASOL) teams up with Tainan’s 59 English-friendly restaurants and shops to roll out 500 coupon brochures in hopes of inviting more foreigners to enjoy local delicacies during their visit to Tainan.

The campaign offers discounts at many English-friendly eateries and shops throughout Tainan. Foreign tourists will get discounts or be treated to a free side dish simply by showing the coupon to the shop owners. There are even tea shops offering a 50% discount on all the beverage items for foreigners who make orders in their languages. The Tainan City Government expresses gratitude for these business owners’ kind support and participation, and hopes that this promotional campaign will bring more customers and expand business opportunities for Tainan’s English-friendly restaurants and shops.

The coupon booklet is available during the 2019 Taiwan International Orchid Show free of charge for international buyers and tourists. They are also distributed to the International Cultural Youth Exchange Association ( ICYE Taiwan) and local universities for international students. Jenny, an ICYE volunteer from Finland, recognizes the government’s effort and is highly supportive of the campaign. “I will definitely choose these English-friendly shops first when I have the need,” said she.

The OEASOL remarks that in order to encourage business owners in Tainan to create an English-friendly environment, they have rolled out different promotion measures, such as the Secret Diners Project and the filming contest recruiting university students to produce promotional videos for English-friendly shops. It is hoped that through the joint effort of the public and private sector, this coupon campaign will attract more foreign consumers and motivate shop owners to improve their English skills.

The coupon brochure is valid from the day of release to May 31st, 2019.
