2019臺南市英語閱讀季正式開跑！闖關集點換好禮 全民一起瘋英語2019 Tainan Reading Festival Is Officially Launched
The summertime English-related activities organized by the Tainan City Government are always well received by the public. This year (2019), the city government has organized “2019 Tainan English Reading Festival” activities in conjunction with the English e-book resources provided by SCHOLASTIC. It has planned a series of challenges aimed at different proficiency levels to encourage residents to read more and properly utilize these valuable English resources. Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che helped to launch the reading festival today (July 1) alongside representatives from corporate sponsors and distinguished guests. The mayor encouraged people to join this event, which will give them the chance to improve their English proficiency and win prizes. Let’s all read English together!
Huang said the scale of the 2019 Tainan English Reading Festival is larger compared to previous years, and there is a wider range of participating groups. This year’s festival is divided into five main activities: “Story Time,” “Celebrity Lectures on English Learning,” “Online English Reading Challenge,” “Creative Book Reviews,” and “English Magic Bus.” There will be hundreds of English storytelling activities held in 35 administrative districts. There will also be eight parent-child English activities. The organizer invited internationally famous picture book authors to come and share their works in Tainan. There are activities for all age groups. Kindergarteners; elementary, junior high, and senior high school students; university students; and adults will all be able to find something suitable for them. Former Golden Horse Awards pre-show host Ethan Liu was invited to serve as the reading festival’s spokesperson due to his English fluency, and “Clifford the Big Red Dog” from the picture book series of the same name is the spokesperson for the elementary school group. “Hunger Games,” a book series that was adapted into a film franchise, is the focus of the junior high school, senior high school, and adult groups. Liu presented the press conference. A life-size Clifford and cosplayers dressed as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark from the “Hunger Games” appeared as well.
Huang thanked everyone for their enthusiastic support and provision of all types of resources for the festival. FLOMO Education Foundation and CPC Corporation provided funding; Scholastic Corporation offered the use of its BookFlix and TrueFlix English e-book systems; E.SUN Financial Holding Company sponsored the “Tainan Residents Read Books, E.SUN Bank Donates Books[CC1] ” campaign, donated English books to the soon-to-be completed new Tainan Public Library; and supplied 5,500 black bear coin purses to serve as rewards for the reading points collection challenge; and Crowne Plaza Tainan, Caves Bookstore, and the FLOMO Education Foundation contributed prizes for the prize draws at 120 “Story Time” sessions. Huang said parents and students have enthusiastically welcomed the “Tainan English Reading Festival.” The “Story Time” sessions filled to capacity as soon as they were announced. He added that the credit for this enthusiastic response belongs to the private companies and organizations that are cooperating with the city government on this project. The public and private sectors have successfully created an English-learning environment together.
The organizer, the Tainan City Government’s Office of English as the Second Official Language, said the reading festival and its events are now officially open. Registration systems have been activated, and residents are encouraged to sign up for events. The online reading and points collection challenge has also been launched.
